Alan Chartock in Conversation with Frances Fox Piven

Frances Fox PivenFrances Fox Piven is a distinguished Professor of Political Science and Sociology at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York.

In addition to being a professor, she is an author - writing extensively on American politics - with a special interest in social welfare policy, political movements, and electoral politics. She is the recipient of the American Sociology Association distinguished Career Award for the Practice of Sociology - along with many other honors and awards.

Piven was born in Calgary, Alberta in 1932. She came to the U.S. in 1933 and was naturalized in 1953. During her career, Piven has served on the boards of the ACLU and the Democratic Socialists of America, and has also held offices in several professional associations, including the American Political Science Association and the Society for the Study of Social Problems.
